How often are you courageous? Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer." Courage implies a firmness of mind in the face of extreme danger. But it is also a characteristic that allows us to challenge what we know to be right. If we were honest with ourselves, most of us would know if we were courageous in a particular circumstance that we were involved in. However, do we bother to consider if we were courageous when a situation involves another person or group and we choose to not get involved? These two short stories illustrate what courage looks like in action: Navy SEALs are some of the toughest and most courageous members of the military. But how much courage does it take to reach out and help those in need? SEALs Alex West and Kyle Buckett spend their off time designing specialized surfboards for wounded warriors to help them regain their confidence and strength through surfing. How apt would you be to forgive the person who shot you in the face? Most people would never put themselves in a position to do that. But when 13-year-old, Ian Manuel called from prison after being convicted of shooting Debbie Baigrie, to apologize for what he did, Baigrie was willing to open a dialogue that eventually led to her forgiving her shooter. The world is filled with stories of people, from all walks of life, who have acted courageously for the benefit of themselves or others. Please watch the short video below to hear the story of another person who acted courageously by standing up for what he knew was right. Also, leave me a comment about a time when you acted courageously and who benefited from your actions. What does it mean to connect with another person?
Fr. Richard Rohr says, "Jesus says people who live the vulnerable life of connection and relationship will bear much fruit. These are the people we trust, like, and admire. And yet, so many of us are afraid to be the very thing that we admire the most." Here are some ways we can foster a connection with each other: 1. Be Genuine - Authenticity matters when trying to make a personal connection. People won't want to waste their time getting to know someone who isn't willing to show their true self, warts and all. 2. Be In The Moment - Empathy is a big part of connection. Empathy is developing an understanding of where the other person is coming from. But in order to be empathetic, you have to be present with the person. 3. Be Curious - One of the best ways to get to know someone is to ask them questions. Some of the best connection moments occur when you have deep, heart-to-heart discussions with others. 4. Celebrate The Success of Others - Psychologists define capitalization as sharing good news that has occurred and receiving positive feedback in return. Appreciating the efforts and successes of others builds trust in the relationship. The book, Imagine Heaven, by John Burke, is about near-death experiences that people have faced. Regardless of who the person saw during their near-death experience (an angel, a friend, a relative, etc.), the one question almost everyone was asked was, "How do you treat my people?" In other words, what connections have you made and how do you treat others. We need each other to be happy, fulfilled, and successful. If the COVID-19 pandemic taught us anything it's how much better we are together as opposed to being isolated. Being vulnerable in order to establish connections with others can be scary, but the benefits you will derive from your openness will vastly improve almost all aspects of your life. Give it a try, it will be worth your effort. Please leave me a comment about your thoughts regarding how you make yourself available to connect with others and the benefits that have arisen from those interactions.
