What do you look for in a best friend? Speaker Jim Rohn is reported to have said, "We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with." In theory, Rohn's quote would mean that if you hang out with people who are intelligent, caring, and financially well off, then you would be intelligent, caring, and financially well off. Conversely, if you spend time around people who are negative, condescending, and have a lot of drama in their lives, then you would be negative, condescending, and have a lot of drama in your life. Most of us have friends, but how many of us have BEST friends? Our friends will be there for us to help celebrate the good times, but best friends are there during the bad times as well. Best friends love you enough to tell you the truth even if their honesty risks the relationship with you. However, what do we usually do when people care enough about us to let us know we are making a mistake? We ostracize them and remove them from our sphere of influence. Hopefully, we will come to our senses and forgive our friend for our unwillingness to appreciate their honesty. We all need people with a courageous and forgiving friendship mindset. I once heard the following story about two friends traveling in the desert Two friends were walking through the desert. At some point during the journey, they argued, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand “Today my best friend slapped me in the face”. They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone “Today my best friend saved my life”. The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?” The other friend replied “When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it." Make sure you are surrounding yourself with people who make you better, but also be willing to forgive those when they make a mistake that strains the friendship. It's been said that variety is the spice of life. But our brains are hard-wired to avoid pain and discomfort and to seek pleasure. To the brain, the status quo, the way things are right now is comfortable and familiar and should be left alone. In evolution, there is a process called Muller's Ratchet. Muller's Ratchet states, "Dangerous mutations tend to pile up when there's no genetic recombination, ultimately leading to extinction." It's why so few species reproduce asexually. In the absence of variety, bad ideas tend to stick around, which is also exactly what happens in closed societies and large corporations. Business innovation is defined as, the process through which organizations embark on creating new products and services or reimagining current products and services. Some examples of business innovation include: - The Japanese automaker Toyota, has embraced a continuous improvement process known as kaizen. Toyota focuses on core developments that compound over time, allowing them to stay at the forefront of the automotive industry. - Starbucks has revolutionized the coffee industry by using technology to allow customers to use mobile ordering and use their smartphones to pay for their purchases. - Mobile money services like M-Pesa in Kenya have reduced the need for brick-and-mortar banks. Most banking functions can be done through the use of a mobile phone. Innovation, through continuous variety, updating, and reimagining, pushes business and society forward. Through new, collaborative, and creative ways of providing products and services to consumers, society avoids the dangerous mutations associated with stagnation and pushes the world toward more varying horizons. Leave me a comment about the importance of variety driving innovation in your company or service. Sustainable Excellence Xtras #128 - The Importance Of Giving Of Yourself In A Leadership Role6/4/2024 What is the role of a leader? A leader chooses to effectively communicate the mission that needs to be accomplished, allow his or her subordinates to determine how to accomplish the mission by empowering them, support the team in whatever ways are necessary, and periodically check-in to make sure the mission is being accomplished. In essence, a leader's job is to add value to make sure the team gets what it needs to get the mission accomplished. However, a leader must command respect by earning the trust of their subordinates. But how do command respect? 1. They make sure you adequately supervise your team. 2. They act as a servant leader. 3. They never have a lapse in character and operate with impeccable integrity. 4. They never allow negative perceptions to exist within the group. 5. They refuse to tolerate toxic individuals. 6. They create a culture of accountability where they refuse to make excuses or blame others. One hundred sixty-three of the Fortune 500 companies are run by men and women who served in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps has three core values: Honor - Courage - Commitment. A leader sets the standard, a leader supports his or her team, and a leader chooses to take responsibility for getting the job done. In a nutshell, a leader serves.
